Why is it important?

Solute removal performance of the dialyzer and/or diafilter for large solutes is even more important than the dose of the treatment like Kt/V or the volume of substitution. Moreover, the performance of the device is strongly dependent on the performance of the membrane. Then knowing the membrane structure is crucial because it is the physico-chemical structure of the membrane that determines the solute permeability.

Perspectives

This article could be a basic textbook for non-engineering based researchers such as medical doctors, nurses, clinical engineering technologist and other medical staffs. Comparison of European and Japanese HDF is also an important part of this article because we cannot use other persons' criteria without knowing their background where the criteria had been introduced.
