What is it about?

The research describes COVID-19 metaphors in political and medical media to compare metaphorically based knowledge of coronavirus in English speech professional community and political discourse. Created by world political leaders and media presenters in health discourse, the conceptual metaphors that we describe and compare influence social understanding of the novel disease both directly and indirectly. The research demonstrates how metaphorical language helps to objectify the novel desease and make it recognizable and understandable to society.

Perspectives

The publication reflects our broader interest in how meaning is constructed in media discourse and, in particular, how metaphoric language helps to objectify new knowledge and make it understandable to the reader. Writing the research we were interested in demonstrating how processing metaphoric patterns involves blending mechanisms in the meaning-making and influences the readers' reality shaping. The research contributes to understanding the steps of the cognitive process of metaphoric blending.
