This article attempts to shed new light on our understanding of the cultural world views, attitudes, pratices and commitements. It studies this main theme in the light of the convergences and affinities between intellectuals and movements of distinct aesthetic and ideological heritages in 20th century Portugal, particularly with regard to a broad concern with social and sociocultural issues.

Why is it important?

Instead of repeating the thesis of cultural antagonism, this text identifies political-cultural and civic convergences within the conflitual cultural world of the 20th century, by examining the public intervention of representative Portuguese intellectuals and institutions in different fields, namely: the dissemination of culture; sociocultural activity; the debate over ideas; and the creation of libraries and the support for books and reading, by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
