What is it about?

The article compares the reception of Johann Strauss's operetta Der Zigeunerbaron (Gypsy Baron) in two capital cities of Austria-Hungary in view of different musical traditions and national identities, which influenced them.

Why is it important?

This analysis allows for a glimpse into the nature of Habsburg celebratory culture, which hid complex political agendas and meanings behind its uniform façade of pomp and respectability. Significant music and theatre events belong to the core of this culture as opportunities for the political elite and high society to see and be seen.

Perspectives

Because of the supposed lightness of the genre, operetta premieres in Habsburg Central Europe were particularly well suited to various kinds of political proclamations disguised as celebrations.
