What is it about?
Nostalgia often overshadows the march into the future but growth never stops. The driving need for energy whether it is fuel or food dictates the pattern of modern lives in urban areas. A life which is complicated with problems of survival, commuting and pollution. Air pollution is one of the issues of major concern today especially in Lagos where population growth and urbanization compound every environmental problem.

Why is it important?
Pollution monitoring research studies are part of efforts by scientists to monitor air quality in critical areas of the country. Industries like power generating units, the domestic use of fuel and vehicular traffic pollute an entire city but vehicles are often the single most significant source of air pollution source in urban areas. This is why I and a team of experts investigated the level of these pollutants around Lagos mainland, Nigeria while looking at their concentrations around residential and transport sector locations. http://www.journalhealthpollution.org/doi/abs/10.5696/2156-9614-8.19.180903?code=bsie-site http://www.journalhealthpollution.org/doi/pdf/10.5696/2156-9614-8.19.180903
Perspectives
While these data are still being collected all over the world, not enough is still being done to look at their impact on public health. However, it is clear that people are beginning to suffer the impact of polluted cities in various ways like lung and hearth related disorders. This makes air pollution a high cause of concern. If Vehicular traffic is then considered the single most polluting factor, then the need for mass transit systems becomes important. Millions of dollars were invested in designing internal combustion engines during the world wars. These same engines with modifications are used in cars, buses and trucks all over the world today. Much noise is being made about modifications on these age-old engine but no money is being invested to design a new more efficient automobile engine. Today the best high tech cars boast of a mere 28% fuel efficiency. In a developing country, old cars with old engines probably barely have 18% efficiency. Governmental and individual consciousness must be awakened. The Federal ministry of Environment through its relevant agencies must create policies to address urban air pollution taking into consideration long-term exposures and people that are most vulnerable within the population
