What is it about?

We tested 1,548 samples in 516 three-sample pools and retested individual samples only when a pool was positive. This required 876 PCR reactions, saving about 43% of reagents. Savings were greatest where infection prevalence was low, but retesting positive pools delayed reporting and could affect sample quality.

Why is it important?

Pooling can expand testing capacity when PCR supplies and laboratory resources are limited. The results help laboratories decide when pooling is efficient and when higher infection rates or the need for rapid results make individual testing preferable.

Perspectives

From my perspective, this work matters because Pooling can expand testing capacity when PCR supplies and laboratory resources are limited. I hope the findings support further research and informed, evidence-based decisions.
