What is it about?

This Project collects the public discourses about Read-ing included in 53 news published in four relevant Por-tuguese newspapers: Jornal de Noticias, Diario de No-ticias, Publico and Correio da manha. The analysis is based on the study of the frequency rate and semantic value of a key words selection – present in the news corpus – for the object of the study. They allow observ-ing the public discourses evolution along the period of time studied as a consequence of the new technolo-gies development. The results indicate that technolo-gies start to be a very important part of the Portuguese reading habits, but there are still not quite developed, as not all the functions are exploited. The conclusions would probably be that technologies develop so quickly that soci ety needs some time to get used to them. In this way, they would manage them properly as well as standardize them correctly.

Why is it important?

This time period is especially relevant to analyze as it corresponds to the new technologies' irruption in the reading process, as well as the new formats' devices and tools are analyzed.

Perspectives

This publication is the result of the research project "Estudio de la lectura en discursos legislativos y medios de comunicación social en la Península Ibérica (1999-2012)" developed thanks to the scholarship “Jóvenes Profesores e Investigadores (JPI)” of Banco Santander in 2014 at the University of Aveiro (Portugal). In fact, it is the continuation of the PhD thesis that studies the same newspapers, but just till 2010. The aim is to offer a wider perspective of the reading process.
