Why is it important?

The Effort to Prove Oneself is Exhausting: Employees' efforts to make a good impression at work (trying to be likeable and curry favor with others) exhaust and wear them down. A Workaholic Boss Doesn't Cause Burnout Alone: Just because a boss is a workaholic doesn't automatically mean the employee will experience burnout. Wearing a Mask Changes the Situation: The link between a workaholic boss and burnout is determined by the employee's "impression management" (the role played towards the boss). Not Acting Protects the Employee: If the employee doesn't engage in extra efforts to gain approval or curry favor with the workaholic boss (low impression management), this protects them. This allows the employee to conserve energy and become more resilient to stress.

Perspectives

Employees better protect their mental health when they don't try to project an image of "I do everything perfectly" in the presence of workaholic leaders. Therefore, managers need to create a relaxed and supportive work environment where employees don't feel the need to constantly prove themselves.
