What is it about?

Traditionally, most tourism statistics are generated from the demand side - from the tourists themselves. While this is useful, it leaves a significant gap, on the state of the tourism industries themselves. This paper shows how a significant number of statistics can be gleaned from existing administrative sources.

Why is it important?

This paper uses administrative data to generate new tourism statistics. But the same technique could be applied to any sector of the economy. The philosophy behind this paper is using existing data to generate new statistics.

Perspectives

This paper looks at tourism from a quite unique perspective. Rather than relying on tourism surveys, or using a TSA, tourism statistics are derived from non-tourism related data sources. Not only are the resulting statistics robust, they provide detailed regional estimates.
