What is it about?
We followed 146 patients with dengue and measured blood counts and platelet-related indices over time. Half had mild, 32.9% moderate and 17.1% severe thrombocytopenia at diagnosis; 76% had normal platelet counts by day 10. A lower platelet count at diagnosis was strongly associated with a greater likelihood of hospital admission.

Why is it important?
Dengue can cause rapidly changing platelet levels and serious illness. A simple platelet count at presentation may help clinicians identify higher-risk patients, plan monitoring and admission decisions, and recognise recovery through improving platelet trends.
Perspectives
From my perspective, this work matters because Dengue can cause rapidly changing platelet levels and serious illness. I hope the findings support further research and informed, evidence-based decisions.
