Why is it important?

This paper will be of interest to anyone exploring the social and cultural contexts in which writing systems were adopted and adapted. While it should prove a key text for those teaching or studying the development of the alphabet, writing and literacy, it should also find a second audience in those interested in Egyptian-Canaanite interactions and the impact of empire on indigenous populations.
