What is it about?

Hypotension, cramps and headaches are nasty for the patients, and require countermeasures of the medical staff. Two automatic controls (blood temperature monitor, and blood volume monitor) enable a better haemodialysis treatment (at the patient's individual temperature, and above the patient's individual critical blood volume). In this international randomized clinical trial (6 centres, 26 patients, 778 treatments) the benefit of both automatic controls (applied together) was investigated.

Why is it important?

Patients are not equal, they have different body temperatures, and they have a different refilling into the vascular space. By individual temperature and blood volume control the symptoms during the treatment were reduced by 45% compared to standard therapy.

Perspectives

By automatic controls of the dialysis system the haemodialysis treatment can be adapted to individual needs resulting in a clinically relevant reduction of symptoms compared to standard therapy ("one fits all").
