What is it about?

We performed a meta-analysis to compare the efficacy and safety of graduated compression stockings combined with pharmacological prophylaxis versus pharmacological prophylaxis alone for preventing DVT and PE in surgery of hip.

Why is it important?

Despite the widespread use of pharmacological prophylaxis like fondaparinux and rivaroxaban their clinical effectiveness combined with mechanical methods needs further appraisal. Mechanical methods of prophylaxis like graduated compression stockings, have been poorly studied in patients undergoing surgery of the hip.

Perspectives

With a moderate strength of evidence, combination prophylaxis did not affect PE or proximal DVT compared to pharmacologic prophylaxis in hip surgery patients. With a low strength of evidence, combined pharmacologic and GCS reduces the risk of distal DVT in patients undergoing hip surgery compared to pharmacologic prophylaxis alone.
