What is it about?
Farmers often need to decide whether to sell grain soon after harvest or store it and wait for better market conditions. Building a grain storage structure on the farm can give farmers more control over this decision, but it requires a large investment. This study examines whether investing in farm-level grain storage can be economically and financially viable in the Brazilian Midwest. The article uses several investment analysis tools to estimate expected returns, risk and the time needed to recover the initial investment. The results show that, under the conditions analyzed, own grain storage can be a viable investment. In plain terms, the study suggests that storage structures may help farmers improve competitiveness, reduce dependence on immediate post-harvest sales and make better use of market opportunities.

Why is it important?
This work is relevant because grain storage affects farm income, logistics and bargaining power. In regions where storage capacity is limited, farmers may be forced to sell at less favorable times. The article provides evidence that farm-level storage can be financially attractive when analyzed with appropriate investment tools and risk assessment. This can help farmers, rural advisors, financial institutions and policymakers evaluate storage projects with greater technical support. The study also contributes to agribusiness research by showing how capital budgeting techniques can be applied to a strategic investment decision in farming.
Perspectives
This publication reflects my interest in farm management decisions that combine finance, risk and agribusiness strategy. Grain storage is more than an operational facility. It changes how farmers manage sales, cash flow and market timing. The article shows that investment decisions in agriculture require careful economic analysis, since high initial costs can be justified when the expected returns, risks and strategic benefits are properly assessed.
