What is it about?
In this study men and women suicide attempters personality differences are characterized in comparison to matching groups of healthy volunteers. Personality was studied within the Big Five concept.

Why is it important?
Male suicide attempts have more pronounced personality variables reflecting negative emotions, while female suicide attempts are primarily associated with variables regarding activity and self-regulation. Male suicide attempters typically have high Neuroticism and low Extraversion, while female attempters - low Conscientiousness and Agreeableness.
Perspectives
This study gives an impression on the differences between males and females within suicidal behavior context, adding to understanding the gender paradox in suicidology.
