Comparing the publications from an NIH grant number in NIH RePORTER, PubMed, and Web of Science

What is it about?

Searching by a specific grant number to find all of the supported publications is a key practice of grant renewals and progress reports. Unfortunately, each database source gives different publication lists, and all miss some of the papers that specifically cite the grant of interest. Authors might cite the grant with subtle variations which search engines might miss when returning results.

Why is it important?

NIH project administrators, librarians, and other academic support staff, as well as faculty authors, will need to be aware of how each of the data sources track and capture their publication funding information to make sure that all supported publications are counted and given adequate credit. It is also helpful to know common citation mistakes the authors might make- such as dropping leading zeros or substituting the letter "I" and the number "1".
