What is it about?
When studying long-term trends in the ionospheric parameter foF2, which corresponds to the maximum electron density in the ionosphere, the 11-year solar cycle effect must be removed using solar activity indices. This work shows that among solar activity indices, F30 is most suitable for analyses of foF2.

Why is it important?
Application of different solar activity indices results in somewhat different long-term trends/climatic changes in foF2. Therefore it is important to select the most suitable solar index, which is F30.
Perspectives
The F30 index of solar activity should replace the earlier used indices F10.7 and sunspot numbers in long-term trend, climatological and model simulation studies of foF2.
