What is it about?
Cities are constantly changing as new buildings are constructed and existing urban areas become more densely developed. Understanding these changes is essential for sustainable urban planning, infrastructure development, and the protection of green spaces. This research explores how geospatial data and building footprint maps can help identify changes in the built environment over time. By comparing building information from different years, researchers can investigate where construction has expanded, how urban areas have evolved, and which locations may require closer attention from planners and decision-makers. Combining Geographic Information Systems (GIS), aerial imagery, and spatial analysis offers new opportunities to monitor urban development more efficiently. These methods can help researchers, urban planners, and public authorities better understand land-use changes and make more informed decisions about the future development of cities.

Why is it important?
Understanding where and how cities expand is essential for sustainable urban development. This research highlights the value of geospatial data and building footprint mapping for monitoring changes in the built environment. By supporting the identification and analysis of urban growth patterns, these approaches can help researchers, planners, and public authorities better assess land-use changes, identify areas experiencing increased development pressure, and support evidence-based urban planning. The research also contributes to the broader use of geospatial technologies for monitoring urban transformation.
Perspectives
I am particularly interested in how geospatial technologies and artificial intelligence can help us better understand urban transformation. I believe that combining GIS, aerial imagery, and automated building mapping creates valuable opportunities to monitor urban densification and support more sustainable land-use decisions. Through my research, I aim to develop practical approaches that connect geospatial science with real-world challenges in urban planning and territorial development.
