The review article “Unveiling the Bacteriophage Reservoir of the Ganga River: Ecological Roles, Environmental Drivers, and Biotechnological Potential” explores the diversity, ecological significance, and practical applications of bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) in the Ganga River ecosystem. Beyond their ecological importance, the review emphasizes the growing biotechnological potential of bacteriophages. It discusses their applications in phage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics, particularly against antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, as well as their use in wastewater treatment, environmental monitoring, bio-surveillance, and bioremediation. The authors also identify major research gaps, including limited virome studies, insufficient genome-level characterization, and the need for long-term monitoring across the entire Ganga River. Overall, the review concludes that understanding the bacteriophage reservoir of the Ganga will not only improve our knowledge of river ecology but also contribute to sustainable environmental management, public health protection, and the development of innovative antimicrobial strategies for the future.
