What is it about?

Metastatic cancer, especially in the growing population of geriatric patients, presents a big challenge to the entire health care system, worldwide. This article describes some common medical problems, faced by patients with metastases to liver and bone, and presents a diagnostic approach, and therapeutic management of various symptoms, relevant to advanced stages of incurable disease.

The article highlights the unique position of pharmaceutical care, and the role of close collaboration between physicians and pharmacists. This is particularly beneficial for patients with advanced malignancy, multi-morbidity and polypharmacy. Focusing on the patient safety (by eliminating unnecessary medications or their harmful interactions), and comfort are the top priorities.

Perspectives

For many patients with metastatic cancer (and for their families or caregivers), achieving the quality of life, functional independence, and controlling the disease symptoms are essential. This article will help in coordinating efforts of the oncologists, primary care physicians, pharmacists, and nurses to skillfully address the patient’s needs or priorities, and to successfully overcome some common barriers to achieving the individual goals.
