This article presents a perspective on the social construction of an elementary school that is seldom acknowledged--that of the parents of the students. The research used a novel 'tourist guide technique' as part of a walking tour methodology to collect insider data.

Why is it important?
This article presents a unique interview methodology that demonstrates how notions of space and place are socially co-constructed using the semiotic resources of material objects, many of them conveying linguistic messages. The article is also an early work in the expanding area of 'schoolscapes' research that addresses the language/s present in educational settings.
