What is it about?

This is a worldwide state-of-the-art analysis for the public transport phenomenon called Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). This could be a cost-effective, flexible and easily implementable mass-transit solution combining the ease of conventional bus services with the reliability and comfort of railway-based operations. The present article is attempting to identify the formula of success by looking closely at the very identity of the mechanism as a whole and reviewing good and bad scheme examples from around the world.

Why is it important?

The article redefines to an extent BRT by presenting its strengths and weaknesses in a systematic way that is communicated with the use of a single table. It is also reporting useful lessons from around the world from local BRT applications, which could eventually help policymakers to understand better the way with which such a mode could be appropriately introduced or modified.
