What is it about?

This article includes a comprehensive investigation comparing the influence of tungsten on pitting and crevice corrosion of commercial SDSS. We studied UNS S32750 (a low-W variation) and UNS S39274, an SDSS with about 2 wt% W. We found that 2 wt% W dramatically improved localized corrosion resistance.

Why is it important?

In the oil and gas industry, all standards treat the various super duplex stainless steels (SDSS) as being equivalent or interchangeable. However, we have shown that high-W SDSS have a much improved localized corrosion resistance in the solution annealed condition.

Perspectives

Until now, only alloy producers had conducted long-term corrosion testing on high-W SDSS. Our work represents the first independent confirmation of the beneficial effects of tungsten in the crevice corrosion performance in natural seawater.
