What is it about?

Most orthodontists believe that sutures (joints of the upper jaw) fuse and facial development in not possible. This study shows that facial growth of the upper jaw can be achieved, even in adults.

Why is it important?

The mechanism of facial and upper jaw growth remain controversial. However, newer studies suggest that stem cells are found within sutures (joints of the upper jaw), and these stem cells may be the basis of facial growth in adults in the right circumstances.

Perspectives

This was the first ever article to measure the three-dimensional volume of the upper jaw in adults before and after treatment with a palatal expander.
