What is it about?

The current work undertakes the study of composite columns composed by a steel profile coated with reinforced concrete under axial compression and biaxial bending moments, applying a calculus procedure within the framework of the Eurocode 4 regulations. Due to the high computational complexity derived from the coexistence of materials with different behaviors and from the numerous variables taken into account, a new software has been developed based on an algorithm which integrates stresses using Virdi and Dowling’s principles. Therefore, when evaluating the composite section stress capacity, we can take into account its materials characteristics by considering the concrete and steel non-linear constitutive relationships. This software is able to automatically produce the section interaction curve or surface, depending on the case being an axial with a single bending moment or an axial with both bending moments. The outcome graphs are especially useful when estimating the sizing of composite columns. Moreover, because of its integration into a more general structures analysis software, it is possible to check composite columns, which means it being a powerful tool when sizing this complex typology at professional studios.
