What is it about?

The Mentawai Islands ar a group of islands west of Sumatra. They have their own fauna, as the sea between the islands and Sumatra is extremely deep. We reviewed the pitvipers on these islands and found three new species, which are described here

Why is it important?

The habitats on some of these islands have been largely destroyed. It is very important to make an inventory of the endemic fauna. Also, it is important to identify these endemic species before widespread species reach the islands by boat or plane. They could wipe out the local fauna

Perspectives

There might be one more species on Batu island. This population still has to be examined. The remaining habitats especially on Nias islands need urgent protection.
