What is it about?

The work investigated the antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of ethanol crude extract of shade-dried leaf of M. oleifera on some stable free radicals: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Nitric oxide (NO), Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothizoline-6-sulfonate (ABTS). The result of the investigation revealed the presence of polyphenol and phenols, high levels of TPC and TFC at 40.0 GAE/g dry matter and TFC 40.56 RE/g dry matter respectively. Percentage inhibition of the extract on DPPH followed linear trend with concentration was 70.30% followed by 62.81% on ABTS, 57.61% on H2O2, and 36.00% on NO. Their respective reducing power (IC50) was 59.80, 40.90, 64.72, 62.64 GAE/g dm at p=0.05 and comparable to AA. The reducing power of the extracts was inversely related to the percentage oxidation inhibition. Correlation analysis result revealed association of DPPH with H2O2 (r = 0.69), NO (r= .72), FRAP (r = .90), FRAP correlated positively and strongly, r = .88, and significantly (p<0.05) with The result revealed good antioxidant properties of the extract, which indicated that M. oleifera leaf is a good antioxidant.
