What is it about?

This article explores the circularity of dynamic interdependencies between energy use and human welfare, as well as economic development.

Why is it important?

This circularity is one of the most fundamental problems in economics. It is about an empirical and contextual investigation of the complex nature of the energy–welfare nexus. In most cases, it is practically reduced to studying the energy–output or energy–growth nexus. The policy implications may vary from country to country, motivating each country’s development strategies in different ways.

Perspectives

It implies that the energy–welfare nexus holds a circular and non-linear nature, making it non-intuitive. However, the principles of physics in the laws of thermodynamics apply to such a circular nexus at all times.
