What is it about?
How did privacy go from being a "shameful secret" to a fundamental personal right in China? This publication answers that question by tracing the evolution of the Chinese word for privacy. It explores the transition from the historical term "Yīnsī" (which implied hiding something scandalous) to the modern term "Yǐnsī" (which represents a neutral legal right to personal data and space). By analyzing this shift in language, the chapter provides a clear, accessible picture of how modern Chinese society and its legal system have developed a new understanding of personal boundaries.

Why is it important?
This chapter explores how the concept of privacy has changed in modern China, tracing its evolution through the shifting meanings of two similar-sounding words. Historically, the term 'Yīnsī' (阴私) carried a negative connotation, referring to hidden, shameful secrets or illicit matters that people wanted to conceal. However, as Chinese society modernized and engaged more with global legal norms, a new term, 'Yǐnsī' (隐私), emerged. This modern concept frames privacy not as something shameful, but as a neutral and essential personal right. By examining this linguistic and cultural shift, the publication reveals how China's legal and social understanding of individual rights, personal boundaries, and data protection has profoundly transformed over time.
Perspectives
Writing this chapter was a deeply rewarding journey into the intersection of linguistics and law. People often assume that the concept of "privacy" in China is entirely a Western import. However, by tracing the shift from the historically negative 'Yīnsī' to the modern, neutral 'Yǐnsī', I wanted to highlight the dynamic, indigenous evolution of personal boundaries within Chinese society. I hope this piece challenges pre-existing assumptions and offers readers a fresh, culturally rooted perspective on how individual rights have transformed.
