هناك صعوبة لدراسة هياكل الاسمال باشعة اكس و لكن الاشعة المقطعية توفر شكلا غير متداخل و ثلاثي الابعاد للهياكل يمكن من دراستها بشكل دقيق كذلك طرق التحضير التقليدية تجعل معظم العظام تفقد اثناء التحضير ولكن صباغة كلا من العظام والغضاريف بطريقة تايلور و فان دايك طريقة عملية و تعطي نتائج اكيدة.
