What is it about?
The health related economic burden from foodborne illness is substantial; costing Americans up to $93 billion in medical costs, productivity losses and lost quality of life. At the state level, the average cost per illness ranges from $1,505 in Kentucky to $2,591 in Maryland when all cost categories are included.

Why is it important?
This is the first paper to estimate the cost of foodborne illness at the state and national levels.
Perspectives
It is important to be able to assess the cost of illness both as a means of evaluating specific proposed or existing interventions and as a way of prioritizing resources to across societal problems. State level estimates allow for interventions to be tailored to maximize net economic benefits from actions at the state level.
