What is it about?

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is developing a risk assessment model for feed mills to help inform the allocation of inspection resources based on the feed safety risk, including animal health and food safety risk. The objective of this study was to estimate the relative impact on the feed safety risk of the selected criteria for the model. To do so, an expert consultation was performed with 28 Canadian feed experts and results from this exercise will be used to design the risk assessment model.

Why is it important?

Risk-based oversight is important to have the best animal and human health protection. Allocating inspection resources towards the highest risk establishments will have the best public health impact.

Perspectives

This article is part of a few publications that pertain to feed safety risks which includes both human and animal health hazards. In addition, this article proposes a risk assessment tool based on a systematic, evidence-based approach which is essential to an efficient risk management. Overall, the purpose of the risk assessment model proposed in this article contributes to a global approach to food safety in a « One Health » perspective, aligning with guidelines from international organizations (e.g..: WHO, FAO, Codex Alimentarius, and the OIE).
