What is it about?

Informal markets are an important part of the culture and economy in Cambodia. However, their lack of hygiene and sanitation practices, food safety regulations, and infrastructure present a risk of contamination to the vegetables and those who consume them. This study investigated the prevalence and abundance of Salmonella enterica in the informal markets in Cambodia. Salmonella enterica seemed to be pervasive, as it was detected multiple times in all combinations of both seasons, locations, and surface types. The availability of this type of data is crucial for the development of effective surveillance and implementation of suitable intervention strategies at the domestic level, thus preventing future foodborne illness.
