What is it about?
This was a trace study from primary school where learners were followed to the junior secondary schools to find out whether they still experienced the problems they encountered at primary school. It was discovered that learners still experienced problems in reading: they showed lack of comprehension because they provided wild answers, the culture in the text books was foreign and therefore they could not relate their lives to it, teachers did not teach learners how to read, only the fluent readers were the ones always reading in class and they read without a purpose.

Why is it important?
Reading is a skill that needs to be taught with relevant approaches.
Perspectives
It is important to check how teachers are trained. Are they trained on the structural syllabus and yet teach the communicative syllabus? How often are they resourced on how to reach reaching to improve the learners skills in reading? These questions need further research.
