What is it about?
Agroforestry is a very important tool for sustainable agriculture. This paper shows how cocoa plantations conserve trees and preserve carbon stocks.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that trees associated to cocoa are mostly multi-purpose trees that provide food, medicine and wood and contribute to the improvement of soil fertility while providing shade to cocoa. These trees are also responsible of up to 95% of the carbon stocks in the plantations. Local populations need technical assitance to improve their agroforestry systems.
Perspectives
I hope this article will be useful, not just for scientists, but also for NGOs working with local communities and involved in sustainable development. In fact, associating trees and crops is one of the main ways of providing multiple sources of income to local population.
