What is it about?
The extraction of oil and mineral wealth has some environmental, social, economic and political impact on host communities. The question however is whether communities derive any sustainable developmental benefit from the wealth extraction activities in the sector and if not, how the conflicts between government and host communities, and between host communities and extractive companies, can be reduced through improvements in the legal framework.
Why is it important?
The paper argues that there already exist some positive examples in the law on how extractive industry communities can enjoy the positive benefits of the extractive industry sector. It also provides improvement and models for improving some inefficient aspects of the law. The models proposed are adaptable in most jurisdictions.
