Why is it important?
It discusses some of the key challenges and opportunities for creating rich annotated video corpora of sign languages.
Perspectives
I think the corpus of Polish Sign Language or Polski Język Migowy shows us that concerted effort is more important than a long history of sign language research for the establishment of state of the art sign language corpora. Each country has its own unique set of challenges and opportunities for creating a corpus. If these are taken into account effectively, many countries should be able to compile reference corpora for their own sign language(s).
