What is it about?

Based on a study of Yenikaraağaç Village, located near the city of Bursa in western Turkey, this paper studies the relationship between local crafts and rural development.

Why is it important?

In order to address the problems of rural underdevelopment and outmigration, we suggest a designerly approach to rebranding rural handicrafts, illustrating how craft practices – more specifically, sock knitting– can support socioeconomic and socio-cultural well-being.

Perspectives

Visiting Yenikaraağaç Village and meeting knitters turned out to be a moving experience in formulating this article with Aktaş and Gürel.
