What is it about?

Combustion simulations seem to be more sensitive to noise than do their cold flow counterparts. This paper explores the numerical methods behind this observation, and suggests potential remedies.

Why is it important?

Reacting flow simulations require an accurate treatment of diffusive fluxes; the enhanced diffusion brought about by filtering noisy simulations potentially impacts the flame dynamics and subsequent modelling. Removing the need for filtering improves the simulation of combustion; the statistics subsequently derived will better reflect physical processes.
