What is it about?

Brickellia cavanillesii (Asteraceae) is an herbal plant consumed extensively in Neotropical Americas (Central America, Mexico, South Western USA) for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The focus of this study was to further investigate the biologic potential of lyophilized extracts of Brickellia cavanillesii (LBC) utilizing gene expression methodologies.

Why is it important?

Experimental methods employed in the determination of the expression of genes associated with the human apoptosis pathway and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT 2) suggest that LBC may possess benefit in the therapy of T2DM.

Perspectives

This article is one of others focused on determining the efficacy of complementary and alternative medicinal products in disease therapy. It was truly a pleasure working with my co-authors on this. I hope this article triggers reading interest and leads to succeeding scientific investigations.
