What is it about?

Leadership in e-learning refers to the role played by influential individuals and groups to facilitate maximal achievement of collective electronic learning (e-learning) goals by students in education. Leadership in e-learning is a vital, underpinning second-order function supporting the primary role of educational technology to enable teaching and learning in the classroom

Why is it important?

There is insufficient awareness of the importance of leadership of e-learning in education. Frequently, e-leadership is delegated too far down the institutional hierarchy to be both authoritative and effective. A lack of awareness, knowledge and resourcing to support this vital function at top management levels in education means that institutions, teachers, students and parents often fail to realise the significant benefits that can be achieved from well-designed, pedagogically sound uses of educational technology.

Perspectives

Exponential increases in worldwide take-up of mobile devices and social media have not been matched by educational leadership in this field. It is essential that we start to wake up to the importance of training, development and research in e-leadership in education to redress this gap.
