What is it about?

Telework has many benefits, offering a possible win-win situation for both employees and employers. The potential advantages of telework include more flexible working hours and autonomy, improved productivity and profitability, stronger job satisfaction, motivation, and positive occupational identity. Telework could help create positive corporate image, lower tardiness and absenteeism rates, and save infrastructure costs and office space. Furthermore, telework may have positive environmental effects by reduced commuting-related traffic problems and urban congestion.

Why is it important?

To make telework a viable alternative to more traditional work arrangements, it has to be understood in its historical and societal context, and its potential benefits and drawbacks should be assessed in relation to individual needs and different organizational settings.

Perspectives

Telework is more important than ever before because of the corona crisis. According to Eurofound, over a third (37%) of those currently working in the EU began to telework as a result of the pandemic. Although there are wide country differences in the recent upsurge in teleworking, the pandemic rapidly transformed the way we live and work around the globe.
