This is the introduction to my book, Cartographies of Knowledge that examines the historical production of three foundational qualitative methodologies: analytic induction, symbolic interaction and ethnomethodology. The book provides comprehensive overviews of each methodology and then demonstrates their strengths and weaknesses by using them to analyze the same three forms of data: an interview transcript, newspaper articles, and television transcripts.
