What is it about?

In regular practice, human identification (age & sex) is done from studying ossification stages of bones. For the first time, we utilized MRI views of an organ (liver) for human identification purposes because of the unique feature of the liver. Liver weight increases with age and is also different in males and females. [Liver weight increases with age, reaching a maximum between 41 and 50 years in men and between 51 and 60 years in women. Thereafter, above the age of 50 years, the liver weight decreases again, and the differences in liver weight between men and women are lost.]

Why is it important?

Our findings show that an organ (liver) can also be studied for confirming dubious age and sex. Thus such a strategy may be employed in special cases of skeletal deformities or mutilation.

Perspectives

The growth rates of body parts vary between different ethnic groups; therefore, the results of this study must be compared with future works and the usefulness be highlighted.
