Why is it important?

Although there is a marked increase in the incidence of Cryptococcal meningitis around the world due to its association with AIDS, reports concerning this infection in the Arab countries, including Qatar, are limited

Perspectives

Cryptococcal meningitis is rare in Qatar and affects both HIV-positive and HIV-negative expatriates. Clinical presentations are nonspecific and require a high index of suspicion. Hence, it is essential to consider the possibility of Cryptococcal meningitis during the investigation of all persons, including non-HIV patients, who present with chronic headache, especially in the presence of fever and neurologic deficits.
