What is it about?

In this review article we talk about a disease only recently described in pediatric textbooks and incorporated in international cough guidelines, that is a common cause of chronic wet cough in children: the protracted bacterial bronchitis. It’s very important to think to this disease in a child with chronic cough and especially to perform differential diagnosis with bronchial asthma.

Why is it important?

It is important to divulgate the knowledge of this pathology because clinicians often do not consider this disease in the differential diagnosis of chronic cough. Therefore they tend to change the antibiotic therapy rather than prolong the same or add steroids. Misdiagnosis of protracted bacterial bronchitis could lead to complications as bronchiectasis.

Perspectives

I hope this research could help to divulgate the knowledge of protracted bacterial bronchitis.
