Why is it important?

Prevention is always better. Oxygen is relatively cheap and easily available. If it can reduce the infection, it will reduce an important burden

Perspectives

Oxygen has been also mentioned as antibiotic. It has been found to be effective in reducing surgical site infection in color ectal surgery but failed in most of the other. This indicate that oxygen probably not helpful in reducing surgical site infection in clean, clean contaminated types of surgical wound.
