What is it about?

This paper describes a unique approach for reconstructing damaged neural tissue. Several new designs for 3D tissue constructs are described in the journal Neural Regeneration Research for using stem cells grown on nanofiber scaffolding within a supportive hydrogel.

Why is it important?

This work proposes a new approach for repairing damage to neural tissue, as occurs in spinal cord injury, stroke, and other neurological diseases. It also provides new tools for studying artificial neural networks, testing new drugs, and investigating mechanisms of neurological diseases in human stem cells that can be derived directly from patient skin cells.
