What is it about?

A compromised flap was salvaged by shunting the return extra-corporeally into a distant vein. It was an innovative but encouraging way by which the flap could be saved.

Why is it important?

Situations in which flap circulation is compromised are not un-common. Issues with venous return are much commoner as it is a low pressure system. Specially in scarred bed when no recipient vein is available, this option can be very helpful. It is much more effective than leeches and a significant amount of blood loss can be avoided.

Perspectives

Though this method cannot be an alternative to a good venous anastomosis, in certain situations where due to nonavailability of recipient vein in the vicinity can be salvaged by this technique.
