What is it about?

Industries in the agricultural sector collect levies, some of which is spent on undertaking core functions like export promotion, quality assurance, research and development, among others. In this paper we assess how money spent on export promotion affects people's social welfare in South Africa.

Why is it important?

It provides insights into the benefits of spending more on export promotion activities. Thus there is a need to mobilise more financial resources to support the export promotion and market development initiative.

Perspectives

Writing this article was interesting but most of all, leaders of some of the indutries contacted me in person to clarify the findings. This led to a great appreciation by industry bodies of the knowledge generated through the analysis that was done. Firm-level based evidence of the impact of export propomotion on various aspects will be provided in the near future.
